Students Benefit from Extra Curricular Activities!
Several students from Kaye's Beauty College, Noblesville, Indiana recently took part in a school sponsored photo shoot and the results were wonderful. Lisa Galloway, administrator at the academy, said, "The benefits to the student participants were beyond measure! Not only did they gain confidence, but they also were able to better develop their 'eye' -- to see their work in a whole new way."
The participants for the shoot were selected by placing 1st during an in-house styling competition. The competition itself was a great experience for the students. There was little or no coaching involved therefore the students were on their own to find the path that would fulfill their vision for their model. Vision is the goal.
Galloway, winner of the 2003 Cosmetology Educators of America "Educator of the Year" award, believes that educators and academies should always look ahead, always be willing to explore new ways to expand the minds of their students. Opportunities like this shoot are just the sort of experience that can help a good future stylist become a great future stylist.
The photo shoot was actually the brainchild of NAHA award winning stylist Bennie Pollard. Kaye's is fortunate to have someone as gifted as Bennie as a member of the school's Advisory Committee. Bennie is pure energy. When he visits the school and interacts with the students the effect is electric! Bennie has become a role model for all of the students at Kaye's. Galloway notes, "Bennie and I share many of the same philosophies. We both love and respect this incredible industry and we both share a burning desire to enlighten the future generations of stylists to the possibilities that the industry holds. Their future is only limited by their imaginations!"
The shoot was a three-day event, one day of model prep and two days of actual shooting. We were hosted by Professional Salon Concepts at their space in the historic Stutz Building in downtown Indianapolis. The model prep was done there, and the building itself served as the backdrop for the shoot. Galloway believes that you should do your best, or don't bother. Therefore, photographer Ed Brown and stylist/make-up artist Lesa Miller were brought in from Louisville. Bennie has worked with them extensively over the years, including his NAHA award winning work. Working with such a team of experienced professionals was the key to the entire project. It was magical for everyone involved and the results speak for themselves. The students loved it, and brought some of that magic back to school with them - we all continue to see the benefits in their work.
